STEP Centre   Since the 1980’s when graphics displays and CAD (Computer Aided Design) became available there has been an international program to develop a comprehensive STandard for the Exchange of Product models (STEP - ISO 10303). These structured knowledge-based engineering standards capture all information about products and engineering projects in a format that is both human and computer understandable.   This suite of standards, which like the Internet has been largely funded by the military, support Concurrent Engineering (simultaneous use and development of design data and databases by collaborating engineers anywhere in the world), advanced design methods such a Simulation Based Design, Virtual Prototyping and Rapid Prototyping, and the complete Life Cycle Analysis of products (including their deployments, recovery and recycling). Life-Cycle based design is especially important for complete recycling and Total Sustainability.

SBD uses the comprehensive data in STEP Product Model databases to construct Virtual Prototypes which are then simulated under various conditions in order to evaluate and improve the design of products. A Rapid Prototyping model can be instrumented and tested via a ‘HIL’ (Hardware In the Loop) simulation.
